Postcards For Prize Drawings Now Being Given To Motorists Who Drive Courteously Near Pedestrians.
(Hendersonville, NC, 8/23/07) — On Thursday, August 23rd, the Walk Wise, Drive Smart program will start an incentive program for drivers. We have developed a postcard that will be handed out to motorists who drive courteously near pedestrians. The postcard allows the driver to enter a drawing for one of our monthly prizes.
Staff will be at the mid-block crossing near Black Bear Coffee on Main Street at 11:00 a.m., rewarding drivers who stop for pedestrians in the crossing. The plan is to work in areas where drivers have to stop for enough time that the transaction can be made.
In the future, we might stand on the sidewalk at an intersection on Church Street or King Street, both one-way streets. If the lead vehicle in the lane nearest the curb stops behind the stop bar when the signal turns red, we could walk up and offer the postcard. It should only take a few seconds to hand the postcard to the driver and say thanks. We will also be reminding those who venture into the stop bar area that they could have received a postcard if they had stopped behind the line. We will be identifying other good handout locations in the community.
